If you're looking to add something extra yet simple to your next Valentine's gift, consider making a pop-up Valentine card. This craft is always popular in kindergarten art classes, and it can still be a creative way to express your feelings to someone else.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Posterboard/construction paper
  • Scissors
  • String (optional)
  • Tape/glue
  1. Step 1

Take a piece or poster board, construction paper or something else sturdier than regular paper. Cut it into an 8-by-11 inch piece, then fold it in half. (It should be folded into a 6.5-by-8 inch piece.)

  2. Step 2

Cut a Valentine symbol out of another piece of paper. A heart would be the simplest design. If you want something more complex, try a cupid design.

  3. Step 3

Write your Valentine note inside the card. It can be within the inner fold of the card or even on the pop-up design. Write the "teaser" on the front of the card (the message that entices the reader to open it).

  4. Step 4

Attach the pop-up design to the card using strips of poster board or string. Make sure either (especially string) is tightly secured to the card and placed as close to the opening as possible.

  5. Step 5

Fold up and close the card. Re-open it to see your pop-up symbol stand up when opened.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you need to fold the symbol so that it fits in the card, fold it so the crease faces the card's opening, not the card's inner crease.
  • It may take several tries to find the correct placement of the pop-up symbol so that it stands up the way you want when it is opened.
  • It's possible the card won't open up completely. Don't open it too quickly or you risk tearing the pop-up off of the card.
