How to Construct an Outdoor Shuffleboard Court

Pour a smooth, level concrete slab large enough to accommodate a court area 52 feet long and 77 inches wide, plus room for players and spectators to stand or sit at either end and along the sides of the court.

Paint or stain the concrete green. Measure and paint the court lines white if the court is to be green, or black or other dark color for an unpainted court. Allow for a 4-foot standing area for players at both ends of the court. The easiest way to paint the court lines is to buy and use a template.

Prepare the court surface by thoroughly cleaning the surface and then coating it with shuffleboard wax so the disks will slide freely. Wax must be stripped and reapplied as it wears.

Acquire outdoor shuffleboard pieces. You will need 4 6-inch disks (or weights) in 2 colors and four 6-foot, 2-inch cues. If you have limited storage space, you can opt for telescoping disks that compress to 4-foot lengths. You will also need a scoreboard.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't have space for a full-size court, consider building a 30- or 27-foot court. You can mark the court with dark chalk and play on a surface that is also used for other purposes such as basketball.
Consider buying a roll-out court which will allow you to play on any flat surface of sufficient size indoors or outdoors. A portable court doesn't require waxing, although you may want to coat the bottoms of the disks with silicone spray.
