Ahoy, matey! You might hear that phrase uttered plenty on Talk Like a Pirate Day, which is celebrated every September 19th. If you love all things pirate, especially the way they talk, then you'll certainly want to join in the fun that day. Here are some ways you can celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn pirate vernacular and use it throughout Talk Like a Pirate Day. Say phrases like "Ahoy, matey!" and "Aye!" and "Avast, ye matey!"

  2. Step 2

Imitate how a pirate talks, not just by using the words and phrases but by using a deep, threatening voice. Say "Grrrr!" and have an attitude like a pirate. Be "mean" and scurvy!

  3. Step 3

Attend a convention that celebrates Talk Like a Pirate Day. For instance, FenCon, a science fiction convention in Texas, runs in late September and has included Talk Like a Pirate Day festivities in their program.

  4. Step 4

Use Talk Like a Pirate Day as a fundraiser for a charity or event. Throw a pirate party, festival or fair. Have pirate-related games, sing-a-longs and costume contests. Charge a nominal fee to raise money for your fundraiser.

  5. Step 5

Check your local paper for announcements concerning possible Talk Like a Pirate Day celebrations and plan to attend. Charities, schools and even pubs may offer Talk Like a Pirate Day parties and events.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch pirate movies to get an idea about how pirates talk. Rent movies such as "Captain Blood", "Treasure Island" and all three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.
  • Dress like a pirate, if possible. Rent a pirate costume or make your own. Becoming a pirate might help you to talk like one.
  • Check with your boss or human resources department to make sure it is okay to come to work dressed like a pirate on Talk Like a Pirate Day. Some companies may have strict rules or policies regarding such behavior.
  • Plan to attend PyrateCon, a convention dedicated to pirate lore, culture and history, held in New Orleans every April. This can help prepare you for National Talk Like a Pirate Day.
