Mosaic pictures are all about using smaller pieces of materials like tiles or stones to make a bigger picture. Mosaic art dates as far back as the 4th century B.C. They are often used in interior design on surfaces like walls and furniture, but they look excellent framed as well. Creating your own mosaic can be a challenging exercise in abstract thinking, but it can also yield very creative and beautiful results. This guide will detail how to create your own mosaic art with tiles.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tile
  • Grout
  • Mortar
Step1
Decide what type of picture you would like to create.
Step2
Select your ceramic color tiles to use for your mosaic. You can buy small color tiles, or you can break up larger tiles for a nice puzzle-piece effect by smashing them against a hard surface.
Step3
Lay out your tiles to create a blueprint for the picture you would like to create.
Step4
Lay mortar to the surface you would like to put your mosaic on.
Step5
Place your tiles onto the mortared surface in your desired design plan.
Step6
Allow the mortar 24 hours to dry, then grout. Follow the directions on your package of grout to properly seal in the gaps between your tiles.
Step7
Wipe your new tile mosaic clean with a wet, heavy duty sponge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear goggles if smashing tiles!
