Everyone has had a moment of pure panic, when the toilet is running and refuses to stop or the sink seems to be broken and drips endlessly. All you want is to be able to make the water stop. If you know how to turn off the water to your bathroom fixtures, you can say good-bye to those tortuous moments.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Search behind the toilet or under the sink for where the water supply emerges from the wall. This looks like a valve, which will then connect to the fixture itself with a hose.
Step2
Look for the valve that attaches to the metal piping, which will be the shut-off valve. Start at the pipe that emerges from the fixture and track it to a valve near the wall, or simply look for the valve. It should be behind the toilet or under the sink.
Step3
Turn the valve clockwise until the water stops flowing through the appliance that has given you the trouble, or until the valve will not turn any more.
Step4
Call for help or fix the problem yourself.
Step5
Turn the water back on with the same valve to test the solution. If the leak continues, just turn the water back off and try again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean up the water as quickly as possible, before you even fix the problem. Water damage can be very expensive to fix.
