You can sharpen your skills when you make a crochet skirt for a child. Learn to read a pattern, select appropriate yarn for your project, and refine your stitches, and when you’re finished, you’ll have a lovely, wearable project. Select a pattern that uses worsted weight yarn; it has enough bulk that you can hold it easily if you’re a newcomer to the craft or if you have sore joints. Purchase enough yarn to complete your project. Your pattern will tell you the correct size hook and the best yarn to use.If you don’t have a pattern, try this simple skirt for a toddler. The first two rows will create the top edge for the skirt, the openwork will serve as a casing for a drawstring, and the rest of the piece is the skirt.

Things You'll Need

• Worsted weight yarn (you can use scraps or purchase a 6 oz. skein)
• Crochet hook Size I

Instructions

1. Crochet a chain of 83 chain stitches. To complete Row 1, work one single crochet in second chain from hook and in each chain across (82 stitches). Chain 1. Turn your work. To complete Row 2, work one single crochet in each stitch across. Chain 3. Turn your work.

2. Crochet a row of openwork for the skirt's drawstring. To complete Row 3, count your Chain 3 as the first double crochet on this row; skip the stitch directly under it and double crochet in next stitch. [Chain 2, skip two stitches, work one double crochet in each of next 2 stitches], repeat across all stitches, finishing with 2 double crochet. You should still have 82 stitches total. Chain 1 and turn your work.

3. For Row 4, work one single crochet in first stitch from hook, 2 single crochet in chain-2 space, [single crochet in each of next two stitches, 2 single crochet in chain-2 space] across to end. Chain 3 and turn your work. (82 stitches)

4. To complete Row 5, work one double crochet in 5th stitch from hook, chain 2, skip 6, [double crochet, chain 3, double crochet] in next stitch. Repeat to end; finish the row with [double crochet, chain 1, double chain] in last stitch. Chain 3 and turn your work.

5. For Row 6, work 3 double crochets in chain-1 space, make 8 double crochets in next chain-3 space, continue to end of the row in pattern, finishing with 5 double crochets in turning chain. Chain 4 and turn your work.

6. For Row 7, work one double crochet in first stitch, *chain 2, [double crochet, chain 3, double crochet] in space between 4th and 5th chain of group. Repeat from * to end of row. Finish with [double crochet, chain 1, double crochet] in last stitch. Chain 3 and turn your work.

7. Repeat rows 6 and 7 until your skirt is the right length for your toddler. Tie off. To make a ruffled "hem," attach yarn in a contrasting color and work 2 double crochets in each stitch across row. Tie off.To finish your skirt, sew the back seam. Make a chain-stitch drawstring; attach a tassle at each end and thread it through the row of openwork at the waistline.

• You can adapt this pattern to fit any size person; to make a larger size skirt, corchet a foundation chain in a multiple of 7 chains plus 5 stitches.
