How to Draw Sorcerer Mickey

In the 1930s, Mickey Mouse’s popularity was falling fast, especially when Looney Tunes and Felix the Cat were introduced. In 1940, Walt Disney gave Mickey Mouse a makeover and made him a star in a featurette in the full-length Disney animated symphony, Fantasia. Mickey’s role in Fantasia helped him to gain popularity again, making him a mainstay in Disney lore once again. Here is a Photoshop Elements 5.0 tutorial on how to draw Mickey in his life-saving role. Although this tutorial is done in PS 5.0, any digital or traditional medium can be used.

    1. Drawing Sorcerer Mickey

      • 1

Draw a large circle that has two smaller circles added to the left. Here is the classic Mickey Mouse profile. To the lower right, add a vertical oval with another SMALLER oval on top. Here are Mickey’s nose guidelines.

      • 2

Below the head, add a lima bean shape for Mickey’s body. This lima bean will bow out to the right slightly.

      • 3

Add Mickey’s arm guidelines. The left arm is short and a bit fat and juts out to the left. The right are is longer and looks like a skinny ghost—larger at the base, skinny at the end, jutting out to the right.

      • 4

Add legs by drawing two tubes that are about an inch long. The left leg should go out to the left slightly; the right leg should be straight.

      • 5

Draw the guidelines for the hands and feet. The hand guidelines should look like flames with a single plume that will be Mickey’s fingers. The feet are ovals attached to the bottom of the leg tubes that were drawn in step four.

      • 6

Draw Mickey’s face. Trace the head guidelines you drew in step one to shape Mickey’s head. Next, draw half of a three-leaf clover in the right and center for the peach portion of Mickey’s face. Add two elongated ovals for eyes and an open-mouthed grin.

      • 7

Add Mickey’s sorcerer’s hat. His hat looks much like the stereotypical witch/princess/sorcerer’s hat, so all you have to do is draw a triangle on top and to the right of Mickey’s head, covering a large portion of Mickey’s right ear. Add stars and moons to the hat.

      • 8

Add the “shirt” part of Mickey’s robe. The robe has a turtleneck-like feel to it, so create a neck that is folded over. When adding the sleeves, make sure they are oversized and roomy. The right sleeve should be overlapped and close to Mickey’s body, not all the way up his arm.

      • 9

Mickey’s gloves. Mickey has three fingers and thumb, not four fingers and a thumb like people do. His right hand has the index finger pointing up, and his right hand is open.

      • 10

Draw Mickey’s robe tie, robe bottom, and shorts. Mickey’s tie is a rope that has a bow to the right center. Since the tie is a rope, you can add a braided effect by crosshatching lines. Mickey’s robe is also over-sized, so make sure the fabric drapes over and “puddles” unto the floor on either side of his feet. Mickey’s shorts are rounded with a little rectangle on the right side for a short leg.

      • 11

Draw Mickey’s leg and shoes. Only Mickey’s right leg shows, so trace over the right leg tube you drew in step four. The shoes are fabric and too big, so there is overlapping fabric here. The shoes come to a rounded point at the tip, so indicate this by adding wrinkles toward the end of the shoe. Erase the guidelines.

      • 12

Color Mickey’s head, legs, and arms black.

      • 13

Color in the base colors for Sorcerer Mickey. The colors are as follows:Mickey’s Face: Light PeachMickey’s Robe: RedMickey’s Rope and Shoes: Ecru/GoldHat and Shorts: Blue

      • 14

Create a new layer and title it “Shading.” Pick shades that are at least two shades darker than the base colors used in step thirteen. Determine your light source, as that will be attended to in step 15. Where there are wrinkles and folds, add the darker colors to create a folded, shadowed look. Use the blur tool to smooth the edges for a more natural look.

      • 15

Create a new layer and title it “Light source.” Set the opacity to 50% and use the white paintbrush to lightly go over where you would like the light to be. Use the blur tool to smooth your edges.

      • 16

Flatten your image and add effects if desired. A sparkle brush is great for adding magic effects and can be downloaded at Obsidian Dawn’s website.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can use the magic wand tool to choose certain large areas you wish to color; this will be helpful in the coloring process.
