How to Make Bay Rum Aftershave

Bay rum aftershave has a light and spicy scent made just for a man, and when he splashes it on after a shave, it will leave his skin feeling smooth and tingly fresh. It's easy to make out of a few completely chemical-free ingredients, making it a definite improvement over expensive commercial aftershaves.

Things You'll Need

• 8 oz. gin or witch hazel
• 1 qt. glass jar with lid
• 2 oz. dark Jamaican rum
• 3 bay leaves
• 1/2 tsp. allspice
• 1 large cinnamon stick
• 1/2 tsp. orange essential oil
• Cheesecloth or muslin
• Strainer
• Bowl
• Airtight plastic bottle
• Funnel

Instructions

1. Place the gin or witch hazel in a glass jar. Add the Jamaican rum, bay leaves, allspice, cinnamon stick and orange essential oil, and attach the lid securely.

2. Shake the jar until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

3. Put the jar in a dark, cool place for 2 to 3 weeks, shaking occasionally.

4. Lay a piece of folded cheesecloth or muslin in a strainer, and strain the bay rum aftershave into a bowl.

5. Pour the aftershave into the airtight plastic bottle, using a funnel, and attach the lid securely.

6. Use the bay rum aftershave after each shave, shaking it before each use.

Tips & Warnings

• If you don't have muslin or cheesecloth, strain the bay rum aftershave through a coffee filter. It works just as well, and makes it easy to discard the bay leaf and cinnamon stick.

• Double the recipe if you want a larger batch. Bay rum aftershave will keep for a long time.
