Thunderbird is an Mozilla-created, cross-platform email client. Much like Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird supports POP and IMAP, allowing you to read your messages offline. However, in order to do so, you need to configure Thunderbird to work with your web-based email accounts, like Gmail. Configuring Thunderbird to work with Gmail is a relatively simple process.

Configuring Thunderbird to Work with Gmail

  1. Step 1

Begin by enabling POP in your Gmail account. Click on the "Settings" tab once you've signed in to Gmail and then click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP." Under "POP Download" choose whether you want to enable the setting for all your email or just the email that arrives after you make this change. Select the correct box and, from the dropdown options, choose whether you want to keep a copy of your email messages in your Gmail inbox, archive them or delete them. Click "Save Changes."

  2. Step 2

Configure your Thunderbird account to download your Gmail messages. Launch Thunderbird and navigate to the "Tools" menu.

  3. Step 3

Go to "Account Settings," then to "Add Account." This should launch the "Account Wizard." Choose Gmail from the email account options and click "Next."

  4. Step 4

Enter the name you would like to be displayed when you send an email in the "Your Name" field in the "Account Wizard" window. This is the name that other people will see in the "From" line when you send them messages.

  5. Step 5

Type your Gmail address in the "Email Address" field and click "Next."

  6. Step 6

Verify that information on the next screen is all in order and then click "Finish."

  7. Step 7

Finish configuration by navigating to the "Account Setting" window. Select "Server Settings" and de-select the box next to "Leave Messages on Server." Click "OK" and you should be all set!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to clear your cache periodically or to set it clear every so often. Your Thunderbird and Gmail service may start to slow down when the browser cache is full.
