Any woman who has taken down an up-do created by her hairdresser knows that a great many hair pins can hide in hair. Thin and flat, hair pins disappear into a hairstyle, holding it firmly while giving the illusion that it's somehow holding itself together.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Arrange your hair in the way you want and hold it in place with one hand.

  2. Step 2

Insert the tips of the hair pin at the edge of the hair you want to hold in place. Grab a bit of hair between the prongs of the hair pin.

  3. Step 3

Pinch the hair pin slightly so the ends are closer together.

  4. Step 4

Rotate the hair pin outward and pick up some hair close to your scalp.

  5. Step 5

Rotate the hair pin back, picking up a bit more of the hair you want to hold in place.

  6. Step 6

Push the hair pin into your hair as far as it will go, allowing it to open up when you let it go.

Tips & Warnings
  • To make sure that your hair pins aren't seen, buy them in a color similar to your hair color. Hair pins come in black, brown and light brown.
  • Hair pins are also called double point hair pins because they have two prongs to hold onto your hair. Single point hair pins are also called hair sticks, and are usually decorative. However, double point hair pins can also be decorative, made to stay partly exposed.
  • Hair pins can also be used to set hair in pin curls as bobby pins tend to dent the curl.
