How to Keep Events Upbeat as an Emcee
If you've accepted a gig as the emcee at a wedding, company picnic or other event, there's no absolute foretelling of what your challenges may be, but it is possible to bring your best game to the table. Here are some ways to effectively handle anything that may come up at an event and keep events running on the lighter side throughout your time at the mic.

1
Come armed with material. Approaching an event as emcee with some nice little jokes and banter is much better than just showing up. You never know when a moment of silence will require just that little perking-up phrase that will get things flowing again.

2
Stay away from controversial topics. This is easier for some than for others. If you're one of those who was chosen for your ebullient charm and outspoken nature, but sometimes has trouble choosing topics, you might even want to make a list of any 'big three' topics others may have warned you about bringing up to a crowd.

Over-ride drama. Yes, there's always the chance that the bride, the bride's mom, or any other of a cast of possible characters may inject some bad mojo into the scene of your very capable emceeing. Your best chance with these moments is to prepare to 'take over' as much as possible, brushing away an awkward statement or action and re-directing the crowd's attention. If you can get good at this, your emcee skills will be golden.

4
Prepare for the eventuality of fisticuffs. If you're considering 'keeping things light' at an event, it may be a clue that there's the possibility for things getting really heavy. In a worst case scenario (an all-out brawl), you'll want to have a contingency plan that includes enlisting key members of the wedding party (or office at an office event) to help you get things back under control quickly.

5
Get help. Emceeing generally works better when you engage the 'natural potential' of others. Get the key people who are central to the event up to the limelight, and then take a back seat. It will make your job easier and allow others to shine.
