How to Do Basic Progressive Salsa Dancing Moves

Salsa is one of the most popular dance styles that all ages can enjoy. Every culture brings their style and flavor to the dance. Salsa is a mix of styles. There are progressive basic steps in Salsa. The dance has many variations such as New York style, Cuban, Dominican and Los Angeles, to name a few. Read on to learn how to do progressive Salsa dancing moves.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Connect to your partner. The man's left hand holds the woman's right hand. His right hand and arm wrap around the woman's back beneath the left shoulder blade. The woman's left arm is resting on his right arm.

  2. Step 2

    Move as one unit and sway to the music while incorporating the foot movements. Take the first step. The man's left foot steps forward and releases the weight on the right leg and foot. The woman's right foot steps back and the weight on the left leg and foot releases.

  3. Step 3

    Start the basic step with the man's right foot stepping back and releasing his weight on the left foot and leg. The woman's left foot steps forward and the weight on the right foot releases but there is no close of the feet on the hold during the count.

  4. Step 4

    Continue the move as the arms swing back as the dancer steps back. The man takes the left foot forward, releases the weight on the right and his arms swing forward. Simultaneously, the woman takes the right foot back, her arms swing back and she releases the weight on the left foot.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat the action to continue the progressive salsa basic. The arms of both dancers come together to begin the basic step on the hold or break in the count.

Tips & Warnings
  • The rhythm of Salsa is quick, quick, slow or one, two, three hold four, five, six, seven hold eight. Salsa steps change weight with the quick, quick, slow and are small movements.
  • Practice the steps alone before trying it with a partner. Once you learn the basic moves, add different variations of the Salsa dance.
