Things You'll Need:
- Capo
- Special partial/adjustable capo (optional)
-
Step 1
Tune your guitar as you normally would.
-
Step 2
Apply a regular capo leaving either the highest or lowest string unfretted, depending on the tuning you desire. Depending on the type of capo you have, this may take some adjustment of its tension.
-
Step 3
Make sure the capo is not touching the open strings.
-
Step 4
Check your tuning. Sometimes a capo can cause tuning to vary slightly on the fretted strings, so you may need to tune again.
-
Step 5
Remember that the most common partial capo leaves the E string open with a partial capo at the second fret. This gives you a tuning of F#BEAC#E. Capoing like this allows you to create a drone on your highest treble strings while also being able to reach higher notes comfortably.
-
Step 6
Apply a specialized capo as you normally would, but raise or lower each string individually. The tunings here depend entirely on the individual song you want to play.
