Instructions on Repairing a Garage Door
Identify your door. There are two basic types of garage door: wood and steel. Many different variations in style exist. All newer models have panels joined by hinges so that they can roll up and down, but the occasional old fashioned single panel swing-up door can still be found.
Look for the quick fixes. There several do it yourself possibilities when it comes to repairing a garage door. Broken or missing hinges can be fixed or replaced quickly with a few hand tools, as can rollers; the main concern is matching size and circumference accurately. WD-40 is a good lubricant for stiff or squeaky doors.
Recruit some back-up. Spring system repair is much more complicated (and dangerous). You will need a helper, and should support the door while servicing springs. Make sure you have safety cables threaded through the center of coil springs for safety. These old-style springs weaken with time and can break without warning, so use extreme caution!
Follow the directions. Torsion springs require careful adjustment so be sure to read the manual for your particular door to properly set the spring tension. This is crucial to the safe and correct operation of the door. Most garage door repairs should not take more than a few hours for basic maintenance repairs, or half a day with a helper for the more complex spring work.
Don’t get in over your head. If you are in doubt as to how to repair a garage door, by all means call a pro. Garage doors are heavy and the springs are highly tensioned, and you do not want to risk an injury to yourself or others.
