Instructions

    • 1

Place one foot on a piece of paper. Loosely trace around the outline of your foot, about 1/2 inch away from the edge of your foot (or a bit more if you want the shoes roomier). Cut out this outline to make a pattern for the sole of the felt shoe.

    • 2

Pin the sole pattern to the felt, and cut around it. Cut a second felt sole the same way.

    • 3

Place the top 1/2 to 2/3 of the sole pattern on a piece of paper. Draw a curved line about 1 1/2 inches larger than the sole pattern, making a U shape. Cut along the line to make a pattern for the top of the felt shoe.

    • 4

Pin the top pattern to the felt and cut around it. Cut a second felt top the same way.

    • 5

Line up the center of the curved edge of one top with the center of the toe end of one sole. Pin the entire curved edge of the top to the sole.

    • 6

Sew the curved edge of the top to the sole using a whipstitch.

    • 7

Make a back for the shoe (optional) by cutting a strip of felt that’s about 2 to 3 inches high and long enough to wrap around the back of the shoe, plus 1/2 inch.

    • 8

Tuck the ends of the strip under the edge of the shoe top, overlapping them about 1/4 inch. Pin the strip in place. Whipstitch the bottom of the strip to the sole, and whipstitch the overlapping ends to the shoe top.

    • 9

Repeat steps 5 through 8 to make the other felt shoe.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can embellish the felt shoes by adding rickrack or bows on the toes.

  • Use caution when working with scissors, pins and sewing needles. Felt shoes are not waterproof, and they should not be worn outside.
