For many job hunters, creating a job portfolio to take to interviews and present to potential employers proves a wise choice. A portfolio shows your skill, some work samples and demonstrates your appropriateness as a candidate. To create a portfolio that is winning, include an assortment of items in a professional and polished-looking collection.
Select a professional-looking portfolio holder, perhaps one that is leather-covered or sleek and metallic.
Fill the portfolio with page protectors instead of punching holes in the papers you intend to place in this portfolio.
Break your portfolio into sections with dividers. Decide on sections based on the job. For example, if you are applying for a teaching job these sections may include credentials, assessments and evaluations, sample lessons and photos.
Place copies of your resume along with copies of letters of reference in the front of your portfolio. Make four to five copies of each, and place them in the front of your portfolio, putting them ahead of your front-most divider. By placing these copies in your portfolio you ensure that you have as many copies as you need to hand out as you move through your job hunting process.
Gather evidence of your credentials. Feature them prominently near the front of your portfolio. Include copies of your professional license or degree along with certificates for any courses or programs of study you have completed.
Include some evaluations that show your skill. If you took certification examinations when earning your credentials, include your score report for each. Also add copies of evaluations conducted by past employers, allowing potential future employers to see your skill.
Add photographic evidence of past career activities. Collect pictures of yourself in the workplace or of products you created in previous positions and add them to your portfolio. Mount each photo you intend to include on sheets of paper and slip them into your page protectors to add these elements to your portfolio.
