Things You'll Need:
- Shovel
- Flash light
- Red cellophane
- small container with most dirt
- rain coat if it is raining
-
Step 1
Save it for a rainy day. When its raining, or right after it has rained, is the best time.
-
Step 2
Go outside and find a most spot of ground. There may be worms on the surface already. If not, that's okay.
-
Step 3
Stick your shovel into the ground, (the big shovels work best, as opposed to the small gardening ones), but don't dig up the dirt.
-
Step 4
Pull the top of the handle back a bit and let go. Because the shovel is deep in the ground it will shake back and forth. Worms are sensitive to vibration.
-
Step 5
Do this a couple more times.
-
Step 6
Then wait. Soon, worms, annoyed with the vibrations, will begin to surface all around the shovel.
-
Step 7
Wait til they are almost clear from the ground then pick them up at their base and pull them from the ground. If they are too stuck to pull, hold them for a second and they will let go, so you can then easily pull them out.
-
Step 8
Put them in your small container filled with moist dirt.
-
Step 9
For another method, go to a park or outside after a heavy rain when it is dark.
-
Step 10
Cover a flashlight with red cellophane and turn it on. You will see night-crawlers everywhere and they won't be frightened by the light.
