How to Bend Plywood for a Skateboard

The curve--or arc--of a skateboard is crucial to its functionality. Many people set out to create their own skateboards, rather than purchasing mass-produced "decks" in skateboard shops.Fortunately, you do not have to be an expert woodworker in order to attain the perfect curve for your skateboard. Follow these simple steps to begin the process and then let your creativity take you the rest of the way.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Thin wood
  • Glue
  • Makeshift press

Step1
Find the correct type of wood for the skateboard that you intend to build. Many builders choose a strong wood that can withstand great force, such as Baltic birch or maple. Remember, the wood has to be sturdy enough to support your body weight and the additional force of your downward momentum.
Step2
Search for the thinnest wood you can find. Skateboards are often made by gluing multiple pieces of a thinner wood together. You will find that any attempt to curve a thicker piece of wood will likely damage the timber by the end of the process. Locate any pieces of Baltic birch or maple wood that are between 1/8" and 1/4" thick.
Step3
Determine the appropriate thickness of your skateboard. Most skateboarders will use two or three pieces of wood to create their "deck." Use a waterproof, strong adhesive glue (and lots of it).
Step4
After you have cut the pieces of wood to your desired shape, you will need to build a press. Fortunately, it is easy to build a makeshift press with items that you have in your home. Click on the link In Resources at the bottom of this article to better acquaint yourself with what a makeshift press resembles.
Step5
Build your press carefully. You will need to place a support underneath the bottom of the middle of the wood, as well as a light weight atop the middle of the wood. The heaviest weights should be placed at each end of the wood. They should be heavy enough to keep the wood pressed to the floor and should be equal on each side.
Step6
Keep the wood in your makeshift press for three to five days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not be afraid to apply too much glue. You can always scrape away the remnants after you have finished your "deck."
  • Search skateboard forums online to get ideas for other--more complicated--presses.
  • Test the strength of your skateboard before you attempt any complicated maneuvers.
