1
Make sure the toilet is not stopped up. Try using a plunger.
-
2
Take the lid off the toilet tank and check to make sure the water is working. It is generally a problem with water when there is no water in the tank, or if the tank fails to fill up after it's flushed.

3
Take a look at the chain inside the toilet tank. It could be broken, which means the stopper is stuck and won't allow the toilet to flush. If it's broken, it can be replaced.
-
4
Check the toilet handle next. If broken, take the part to your local hardware store. Get a similar replacement.

Take a look at the rubber flapper. It's basically a stopper that plugs up the bottom of the tank. On modern toilets, the flapper fits into prongs at the bottom of the tank and attaches to the overflow pipe. On older toilets, it is screwed into the toilet. If broken, turn off the water and take out the flapper.

Take the flapper to the hardware store for a replacement. Once installed, turn the water back on.

I'm going to have a look myself and see if I can fix it before I call someone out. I hope something has just come loose and not broken and a part need replacing. I will have a look and check.
