How to Make an "I Love You" Jar

Save

Declaring your love to someone helps keep the relationship alive and open. One way to tell that special someone that your love is ongoing and present is to create an “I Love You” jar that holds frequent reminders of your affection. You can fill the jar with scraps of paper that explain the many reasons that person has your heart or with heart-shaped cookies or candy that express hugs, kisses and other loving expressions.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass jar
  • Heart art -- paper or fabric
  • Scissors
  • Decoupage glue
  • Cosmetic sponge
  • Iridescent glitter
  • Paintbrush
  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Ribbon
  • Red tag board or poster board
  • Hole punch

Step 1

Print or cut out paper or fabric heart designs. Mix and match the hearts so each face of your ceramic jar has a variety of heart patterns. Arrange the hearts on one face to see how the hearts line up across the jar, either in a uniform grid or in a random pattern, if desired.

Step 2

Use a cosmetic sponge to smooth a light coat of decoupage glue on one face of the jar. Choose glossy if you want the finished project to have a bright sheen, or matte if you want a more muted look.

Step 3

Place one heart on the jar and smooth it out with your fingers until it lies flat on the jar with no raised edges or bubbles under the heart. Sponge the decoupage glue over the heart, and continue with each heart until you have the jar covered.

Step 4

Use a cosmetic sponge to cover the dried hearts with a topcoat of decoupage glue. Allow the jar to dry.

Step 5

Mix a tablespoon of iridescent glitter with 1/4 cup of decoupage glue. Stir it together with a small paintbrush until the glitter is fully distributed in the glue. Paint the glittered glue around the edge of each heart or over the entire face to create a sparkly effect. Let this coat completely dry to create a glitter finish that will not flake off.

Step 6

Print or letter a label for the top of the jar that says, “For all the reasons I love you!” Add little hearts around the words, if desired. Decoupage the label to the lid in similar fashion to the jar faces.

Step 7

Cut 1-inch-by-2.5-inch pieces of red, pink and white paper. One each slip of paper, write one reason why you love this person. Roll the scrolls and tie each with a 3-inch strip of 1/2-inch wide ribbon. Fill the jar with the scrolls and close it.

Step 8

Cut a 6-inch heart out of stiff red tag board or poster board and punch a hole in the edge of one lobe. Write a message to your love and then thread a ribbon through the hole. Tie the ribbon around the neck of the jar before giving it to your love.
