How to Make Wind Chimes Using Clay Pots

Create some clay pot wind chimes for someone you love, and the lovely tone will remind them of you each time the wind blows. Easy, inexpensive clay pot wind chimes are a great any age craft, and are lovely either inside or outside.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 or 5 clay pots in graduated sizes
  • Heavy plastic twine
  • Large wooden beads, one for each clay pot, plus one
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paint
  • Polyurethane varnish
  • Sponge brush
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint the clay pots in designs of your choice, and allow them to dry.

  • Use the sponge brush to coat the painted pots with polyurethane varnish, and allow them to dry.

  • Cut about 2 yards of plastic twine and fold it in half. Make a loop to hang the wind chimes and tie a knot. Put the ends of the twine through a bead and then through the top of one of the largest painted clay pot.

  • Place a bead on the twine to keep the clay pot in place, and then add four more knots. The beads and knots will keep the pots separated so they won't break when the wind blows.

  • Feed the twine through the top of the second largest clay pot. Add another bead and tie four more knots.

  • Continue until you've used all the painted clay pots. Trim off any excess plastic twine and hang the pots.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have small stencils, they're a great way to decorate the clay pots.
