How to Make a Grasshopper out of a Paper Clip

How to Make a Grasshopper out of a Paper Clip. Paper clips are handy gadgets--not only do they prove useful in holding paper together, they are also easy to manipulate into other forms. Make a hopping grasshopper out of a metal paper clip, and have a contest to see whose grasshopper can jump the furthest.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper clip
  • Locate a metal paper clip. Steal a clip from a co-workers desk, rummage for one in the trash or peruse the dark abyss of your desk. Pick a large paper clip for the best results. Use a small paper clip when a large clip is unavailable.

  • Hold the paper clip in your left hand, with the outer bend of the paper clip facing to the left. Unwrap the paper clip by pulling on the outer bend to form a very abstract triangle shape.

  • Unfold the inner coil to shape the clip into a triangle. Match up the two end points so that they form one side of the triangle and each of the three bends in the paper clip form a point.

  • Push the corners together to overlap the two end points of the paper clip. Gently pull the two end points in opposite directions, so that they are parallel. Push the two pieces back together so that the segments are side by side.

  • Slam the paper clip grasshopper down on a hard surface to make it jump.
