How to Mosaic Furniture

Save

Mosaic is the art of using tiles to decorate. Only your imagination limits the possibilities of what you can make with mosaic. This is a great way to dress up a piece of furniture. Follow these steps to create your own piece of utilitarian art.

Things You'll Need

  • ceramic pieces, paper bag, hammer, grout, furniture, grout float, damp rag
  • If this is your first mosaic, choose a flat portion of furniture to work on. But truly, there is no limit to what you can mosaic, a table top, a lamp, or a chair.

  • Determine what you want your design to be. You can draw it out with a pencil on the furniture before hand if you'd like. Otherwise, you can do it free form.

  • Lay out your ceramic pieces with spaces between them. You can either buy small mosaic tiles or you can find old plates to break. Just put the plates or colored glass sheets in a paper bag and slam with a hammer. Open the bag and voila.

  • Once you know how you want it to look, remove the pieces and smooth a layer of grout generously on the surface of furniture you are decorating. Place grout on the back of the ceramic piece and lay it in place. Continue this until you have laid out your mosaic.

  • Now take your grout floater and cover your entire mosaic with a layer of grout making sure to squeeze the grout into the crevices between ceramic pieces.

  • Depending on the grout, follow the directions on the package, and when it is dry enough but not completely dry, usually about an hour, begin to wipe off all the excess grout on your tiles so that they are completely clean of grout. There is also a chemical you can use you clean the grout off tiles when they are dry, as another option.

  • When the grout is completely dry and your mosaic is finished you can optionally use a grout sealer to seal your mosaic from water or oil.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research different mosaic design to get an idea for what you want yours to look like. Recycle old plates from thrift stores for your tiles. Use contrasts of size and color for a more dramatic effect.
