The quality of the picture you get from your home theater system is highly dependent on your choice of video cables. There are several options, depending on the system you have, offering differing compatibility and picture quality.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the back of your cable box, DVD player or other video device to see what types of cables you can use. For video, there are usually four different types: component cables (which are usually yellow), composite video cables (which are red, green and blue), SVHS (which are round with a bunch of holes), HDMI (which are high definition multimedia interfaces that carry a high-def audio and video signal and is flat on one side) and DVI (another high-def video interface usually used for computers). The best cables for high-definition video are component and HDMI.

  2. Step 2

Determine what types of video cables can be used with you home theater receiver by looking at the back of your components. You should see at least two input and output RCA connections and a round, S-Video port. There may also be inputs for HDMI and component cables.

  3. Step 3

Attach the appropriate cable to the "video out" port on the back of the device you want to use, and connect it to the matching "video in" port on the receiver.

  4. Step 4

Use an identical cable to connect the receiver to your television set or monitor by running the cable from the "video out" port on the receiver to the "video in" port on the display device.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not mix different types of video cables. They are not designed to work together and can only use specific ports on your home theater components.
