How to Tie a Double Overhand Loop

A double overhand sliding loop, also known as a gut knot or surgeon's loop, creates a quick simple loop at the end of a line. Fishermen use it primarily as an attachment point for a sinker. However, do not use the double overhand sliding loop to attach a leader because it tends to slip.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Form a long bight at the end of a line. Make a loop with the bight such that the working end of the bight is on top of its standing end. Because you make the double overhand loop with a double strand, it uses more line than similar loops so plan the length of the bight accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Bend the bight over its standing end and pull it through the loop created in Step 1 from the back.

  3. Step 3

Repeat Step 1 by wrapping the bight an additional complete turn around its standing end. Wrap neatly toward the end of the loop and ensure that the strands do not cross or overlap.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the size of the bight as required to form the final loop. Note that this knot is similar to a double overhand knot except it is formed with a bight instead of a single line.

  5. Step 5

Tighten the knot by pulling carefully on the bight in one direction and the two ends of the line in the opposite direction. Dress the knot as you tighten it to maintain its proper shape.
