In parts of Texas and Oklahoma, girls wear football homecoming mums to show their school spirit. Many high school girls view football homecoming mums as fashion statements. Military braids, which adorn mums, are one of the most popular braids for football homecoming mums.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy 5/8-inch wide ribbon in your school's colors. The final length of your braid will be one third the original starting length, so multiply by 3 to ensure you get enough ribbon.

  2. Step 2

Cut equal amounts of ribbon for each color. Pick a color to be the primary color and designate it color 1. Use the other color as color 2.

  3. Step 3

Lay color 1 down and position color 2 on top of it at a 90-degree angle. Use a staple to secure the ribbons together. The technique you use hides the staples.

  4. Step 4

Take color 1 and make a 5/8-inch loop around color 2. Use the width of your index and middle fingers pressed together as a quick way to make consistent size loops. Staple the loop in place.

  5. Step 5

Loop color 2 through the loop created by color 1. Do this by pushing color 2 through the color 1's loop before looping color 2. Use your fingers to keep the loops equal in size. Staple the loop in place.

  6. Step 6

Push color 1 through the loop created by color 2. Secure the loop with another staple. Make sure color 1 loops around color 2.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until you reach the desired length for your military braid. Staple the lose ends of braids to the back of football homecoming mums to hide the final staples. You may need to trim excess ribbon after you secure the ends.

Tips & Warnings
  • For more complex military braids, use more than two strands of ribbon.
