How to Make a Sea Creature Mobile

Kids and adults of all ages will enjoy creating this whimsical sea creature mobile. Let your imagination run free and embellish with glitter, decorative construction paper, tiny sea shells or iridescent fabric. The beauty of this craft project is each mobile is different.

  • Styrofoam plate
  • Variety pack of colored craft foam
  • Picture book of sea creatures
  • String or fishing line
  • Sharpened pencil
  • Blunt edged scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Cloth scraps of various color
  • Batting
  • Glitter
  • Craft adhesive eyes

Instructions

  1. Beginner's Mobile

    • 1

      Cover the bottom of a Styrofoam plate with a sheet of craft foam. Glue the foam into place and fold the edges over the top.

      Cut out eight shapes of sea creatures from different colors of craft foam, using the picture book for ideas. Draw details on the creatures with markers to make the mobile realistic.

      Use scissors to cut string or fishing line into eight pieces, 8 to 12 inches long. These are the hangers for the sea creature mobile.

      Poke a hole in each sea creature, one hole in the middle of the plate and 8 holes placed evenly around the plate. Measure with a ruler for equal distance.

      Tie each sea creature to a hole in the plate. Arrange them so that each one hangs at a different length from the plate.

      Glue a strip of craft foam from the plate onto each string. The plate may resemble an octopus.

      Tie an 18-inch piece of string around a scrap of foam. Thread it through the center hole of the plate. Make a loop on the other end to hang your mobile.

      Decorate your sea creatures with glitter and craft adhesive eyes. Sew one fishing line to each of the sea creatures.

      Tie each fishing line to a hole poked evenly around the plate. Measure with a ruler for equal distance. Poke a hole in the middle of the plate to hang your mobile.

      Tie an 18-inch piece of string around a scrap of foam. Thread it through the center hole of the plate. Make a loop on the other end to hang your mobile.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seashells, starfish, sand dollars and glitter can be added to your mobile.
