How to Make Wheat Paste. Wheat paste is easy to make, inexpensive and non-toxic. It's a safe alternative to some of the glues and pastes available on the market today. Not only is it good for pasting posters and wallpaper, it's probably the paste that you remember using to make paper-mache crafts in elementary school. Make this simple wheat paste recipe in your kitchen and have fun gluing.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Wheat or all-purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • Measuring cup and spoons
  • Medium-sized sauce pan
  • Small whisk
  • Wooden spoon
  • Stove or hot plate

Begin by heating 1 cup of water on the stove top in a medium-sized saucepan pan. The pan needs to be large enough to allow you to stir the ingredients without splashing.

Measure 3 tbsp. of wheat or all-purpose white flour into the measuring cup. Add and just enough cold water to the flour to make a thin paste, whisking out all of the lumps.

Pour the cold flour mixture slowly into the pan of hot water, stirring constantly. Bring it to a boil, continuing to stir until it thickens. Once the mixture comes to a boil, it has reached its full thickness. Add 1 tbsp. of sugar to make a stronger paste.

Remove your wheat flour paste from the heat and allow it to cool completely.

Put your paste in a plastic mustard or ketchup squirt container for convenience. On the other hand, you could just leave it in a jar and dip it out with something like an ice cream stick.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your wheat flour paste as you would any other paste. You can store the unused portion in the refrigerator for several weeks. If it hardens, just add a little water to thin it.
