How to Install a Hemi

A Hemi is different from other truck engines because of its internal combustion. The term "Hemi" comes from the engine's hemispherical form and is a trademark term of the Chrysler Corporation. The downside of the Hemi engine is the effectiveness and efficiency of the valve actuation. With greenhouse gases being a hot topic in the automotive industry, the Hemi engine is taking a lot of heat.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hemi engine
  • Front pulleys
  • Alternator
  • Engine mounts
  • Manual transmission flywheel
  • Belts
  • Starter motor
  • Transmission and transmission mounts
  • Clutch actuating parts
  • Bellhousing, clutch
  • Universal joint
  • Drive shaft
  1. Step 1

Assemble the engine before installation. Attachment parts will need to be mounted in the Hemi engine.

  2. Step 2

Purchase an engine hoist, because you will need to lift the Hemi and place it in the back of the engine compartment. Make sure you buy a long arm engine hoist.

  3. Step 3

Install the engine mounts, remove the hood of the truck and remove the transmission shifter tab. You don't have to lift the truck for this step—it can be done on the ground.

  4. Step 4

Take the engine and transmission and attach it to the hoist. Swing the engine and transmission with your friends supporting the back area. Position the Hemi over the engine bay.

  5. Step 5

Drop the Hemi in the engine bay slowly—the transmission area in the rear needs to point down as far as possible. As you lower the engine, push it backwards over the chassis engine mounts.

  6. Step 6

Check to make sure the transmission is square with the chassis—support it with a trolley jack. Drill the holes in the chassis and secure the Hemi with the mounting kit. Tighten the engine bolts and reinstall the transmission shifter.

  7. Step 7

Slide the splined end of the drive shaft into the rear of the transmission and bolt the opposite end to the differential.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hook up all hoses and make sure to fill the Hemi with oil, antifreeze and other fluids before you start the engine for the first time.
  • Many Hemi engines have trouble passing emissions tests.
