Playing an April Fool's Day prank can be easy if your target has a sweet tooth. A batch of bitter brownies can fool anyone with a soft spot for the chocolaty pastries.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 4 squares of unsweetened baking chocolate
  • 1-1/2 sticks of butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1-2 cups of flour
  • 3/4 cup corn starch
  • Baking pan

Preparing the Brownies

Step1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine the eggs, vanilla and 1 cup of flour into a large bowl.
Step2
Melt the chocolate squares and butter together in the microwave for 2 minutes. Mix the melted chocolate and butter when you remove it; there will be chunks of chocolate still at the bottom of the bowl. If those chucks don't melt as you stir, stick the mixture back in the microwave for another minute or so. Combine this with the eggs, vanilla and flour.
Step3
Add either another cup of flour or about 3/4 cup of corn starch. You may not need the entire cup, so add 1/4 cup at a time. Since these are bitter brownies for an April Fool's prank, sugar is not an option. The flour and corn starch will add fluff during baking and make the concoctions look as brownie-like as possible.
Step4
Grease the bottom and sides of a baking pan and pour in the batter. It will be thicker and more like cookie dough than normal brownie dough.
Step5
Bake the brownies for 20 to 30 minutes. Keep a close eye on the brownies as they bake to make sure they don't burn and that they are indeed rising.

Playing the Prank

Step1
Present the brownies. The brownies may not bake as evenly as normal brownies, so dress them up a bit. Cut them into brownie bites or small squares. Pour chocolate sauce or powered sugar on top; a bit of sweet won't neutralize the bitter taste.
Step2
Find your victim. Bring a tray of bitter brownies to your friend's party, place a plate of them in your office break room or present a few pieces to a special friend.
Step3
Stay close to watch the reactions. One of the best parts of playing a prank is seeing what happens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding flour to the batter will make the dough a little drier than the corn starch, so you could use the dough to make brownie-like cookies as well.
  • Be sure to keep an eye on the brownies as they bake; they will cook a little differently than normal brownies.
  • Have some napkins nearby and as well as something to wash down the taste.
