How to Make a Candy Lei

Giving leis to guests and loved ones has been a Hawaiian tradition for generations, but if you can't go to Hawaii and you don't have fresh flowers, you can still carry out the aloha tradition with some sweet and colorful candy leis. Candy leis are easy to make, and they're great fun to give or receive any time of year.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic wrap, clear or colored
  • Curling ribbon or raffia
  • Scissors
  • Variety of colorful candy such as hard candies, gum or jelly beans

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll a length of plastic wrap on a table, and measure a piece at least 4 feet long for an adult-sized lei, or about 3 feet long for a child-sized lei. Make sure the plastic wrap is smooth, without large wrinkles or folds.

    • 2

Put pieces of candy, or a few small candies, about 1 to 2 inches apart down the full length of the plastic wrap. Leave about 3 inches on each end.

    • 3

Fold the top half of the plastic wrap down over the row of candy, and fold the bottom half up, so that you've formed a long tube of candy.

    • 4

Cut the curling ribbon or raffia in pieces about 6 inches long and tie a piece of ribbon between each candy, forming individual candy "compartments." Tie the ribbons in bows or curl the ends.

    • 5

Join the ends together, and tie them with a piece of ribbon, or if you like, tie a larger bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a candy garland by using the same technique, but extend the plastic wrap and candy as long as you like.

  • It's easy to make theme candy leis for any occasion, such as Christmas, Halloween, Easter, birthdays, graduation, or wedding parties.
