Button ornaments are a great down-home way to decorate a Christmas tree. They are simple to make and look great with any holiday décor. If one has a little imagination, a few household items and the steps provided in this article, one can make a simple, creative and unique Christmas ornament.

Things You'll Need

  • Assorted buttons
  • Felt
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Fiberfill
  • Paper
  • Pins
  • Pencil
  • Ribbon
  • Gather all the needed materials. The buttons used can be extra buttons found around the house.

  • Draw out the desired ornament shape on a piece of paper to make a pattern. Try something holiday oriented, such as a Christmas tree, an angel or a star.

  • Cut out the pattern and pin it to a piece of felt folded in half. Any color felt will work fine. Then cut the pattern out of the folded felt, making two separate pieces of the same shape.

  • Sew the buttons all over the front of one of the pieces of felt randomly.

  • Stitch both felt pieces together using a blanket stitch or a running stitch, leaving a small hole for stuffing. Stuff the ornament using a bit of fiberfill. Then sew the button ornament up completely.

  • Use a piece of looped ribbon to hang the ornament on the tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • If one doesn't have a large assortment of buttons lying around the house, one can buy a bag of assorted buttons from a local crafts store.
  • Always be careful when using a sewing machine or a needle, as they are very sharp.
