Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a pop-up sunroof installation kit from an auto parts store or online. Sunroof sizes can range from around 12 by 36 inches to 22 by 38 inches, so be sure to measure the roof of your car before you buy. You'll want to leave at least a foot of space on either side of the cut hole.

    • 2

Disconnect your vehicle's negative battery cable, as you might have to reroute some electrical wiring in order to complete the installation process.

    • 3

Measure the spot for the sunroof by using the printed template that will be included with the installation kit. Center the template on the roof of your car, ensuring that it's in the exact place you want it. Trace around the edges of the paper template with grease pencil, then tape down the edges to hold the template in place for the moment.

    • 4

Drill a pilot hole through the roof of your car in the place indicated on the template.

    • 5

Remove the headliner from the interior roof of your car. Depending on the design of your vehicle, you may have to disconnect dome lights, compartments for garage-door openers or sunglasses or anything else that falls into the area where the hole will be.

    • 6

Remove the paper template and make an outline around the grease pencil markings using masking tape. The outline will serve as a guide as you cut the roof.

    • 7

Cut the hole by inserting the jigsaw blade or a nibbler into the hole you drilled in step 4, then cutting along the taped area. Use extreme caution when cutting this area and work slowly.

    • 8

Verify that the frame of the sunroof fits properly in this hole. The frame should have a snug and secure fit. Use tin snips to remove any rough spots, remove the tape from the roof and replace the headliner.

    • 9

Clean the frame with rubbing alcohol, then remove the adhesive, protective primer and sealer from the kit. Carefully apply these items by following the manufacturer's guidelines.

    • 10

Install the inner ring and tighten the bolts from the inside of the vehicle. This holds the sunroof in place.

    • 11

Install the pinch molding and vinyl trim. Remove the debris from the installation process.

    • 12

Install the glass, the two front hinges and the rear latch. Confirm that the sunroof works properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear safety glasses and work gloves when you are using a power tool to cut through metal.
