Things You'll Need:
- Astrology guidebook(s)
- Daily horoscopes
-
Step 1
Visit a library or bookstore. Browse through the astrology section and find basic guidebooks on the different astrological signs. Read through some of the pages, to find an author whose style and content appeals to you.
-
Step 2
Select one or two books that seem the most helpful. A book explaining how people of different astrological signs get along can provide additional help in creating characters that interact in interesting ways.
-
Step 3
Read through the overviews of the different sun signs. If you already have a general idea of who you want your character to be, find a sign that best matches your initial concept. If you're starting from scratch, you can see which identities appeal to you. If your character is a Scorpio, for example, they can be dark and brooding and be experts at revenge. Libras are social characters that crave human contact and friendships, but can tend towards passive aggressive behaviors with those friends.
-
Step 4
When you've selected a sign for your character, use the details of their astrological make up as a launching pad for character development. Knowing that a character is good at revenge can open that character up to a troubled or violent past, or could make them a ruthlessly catty and backstabbing character in a satirical or chick lit style piece.
-
Step 5
Select a sun sign for each of your characters. Then use the descriptions for ideas on how they relate to one another. Sun signs that are next to each other, like Sagittarius and Capricorn, tend to be drawn to one another but have a lot of friction in their relationships. Aquarians are dreamers, and Gemini tend to flit from one sudden interest to another--so these two characters could make for a very flighty couple that never gets anything done in their lives.
-
Step 6
Use daily horoscopes to help jolt you out of writer's block. Your character's horoscope might say that a friend will help them out of a tough situation, or that it's a good day to start a romantic relationship. These little directions can help jar your imagination and give you an idea of where your character should go next. If you don't see anything that helps, try a different character's horoscope. See Tips Section.
-
Step 7
Use the guidebooks as a reference tool as you write. If your characters get into an argument, check out their sun signs to see how they usually react to adversaries. This can help you put a realistic spin on the fight, where each character has a distinct personality style and approach to the situation. A Virgo character can respond coolly and pragmatically to the situation, while every word uttered can break a Scorpio's heart.
-
Step 8
Have fun with the astrological aspects. Each character doesn't need to be a textbook case of their sun sign. People are individual and other aspects of their astrological chart can affect their personalities. Don't be afraid to add other bits you might like from other sun signs to make your character more interesting.
