Special occasions call for special decorations, not just streamers and balloons. Many people know about carving pumpkins but haven't given much thought to carving watermelons. A watermelon swan is a classic design that makes a perfect centerpiece for a shower or luncheon.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Watermelon
  • Sharp knife or pumpkin-carving kit
  • Paring knife or vegetable peeler
  1. Step 1

Select a well-balanced and unblemished melon in any preferred shape. Any shaped melon will work for the swan.

  2. Step 2

Cut a slice off the bottom of the watermelon. This is the bottom of the swan and makes it easier for the melon to balance upright.

  3. Step 3

Create a swan pattern or find one online. Draw the swan outline onto the melon. Use a pencil with medium pressure to draw on the swan shape, as this will not leave dark lines when the carving is finished.

  4. Step 4

Use a pumpkin-carving kit or a sharp knife to cut out the swan design. Section off the top of the watermelon in quarters and cut off. Scoop out the meat with a melon baller and reserve the fruit for later.

  5. Step 5

Do fine detail work on the swan with a smaller carving knife or paring knife. A vegetable peeler works well for smoothing edges. Trim down the edges around the feathers, beak and head to make it smooth. Carve out the swan's eyes with the paring knife.

  6. Step 6

Fill the watermelon swan with fruit salad or the reserved melon balls. Place any extra fruit in a nearby bowl and add a large spoon for serving.

Tips & Warnings
