Things You'll Need:
- synthetic hair
- metal pet brush
- chair
- rope
- boiling water
- bowl
- wash cloth
- hair straightener
-
Step 1
You'll need some kind of rope, or string. Make sure it's strong because you will be pulling on it.
You will need to tie one end of the rope onto the back of a chair, pull the rope across the other side of the and tie it on. Tie it tight, but not tight enough that you can undo it. -
Step 2
take a small amount of synthetic hair. be careful when you separate your wanted amount from the main bunch of hair, it can get messy.
your small amount should be about the width of your index finger.
Don't try and separate it all at once, just do one dread at a time. -
Step 3
Loop your small amount of hair around the rope until the ends are equal.
-
Step 4
holding the hair about half way down from the rope with your left hand (left handed people, hold with your right hand)
take pet brush in your right hand, and starting near the top, where the hair loops around the rope, start to back comb. work your way down back combing. it doesn't have to be super tight, but enough that you don't have any big gaps.
after you reach the end, you should notices that your dread looks like a fluffy...thing, and your thinking "omg i hope i did this right". -
Step 5
heat up your hair straightener.
take a bowl and fill it with boiling water, you can also use really hot water from your tap if you don't want to boil any.
wet and ring out the wash cloth
dip that fluffy string thing you've made into the hot water. CAREFUL THE WATER IS HOT!!!!
you might want to have a towel down, since your dread is probably dripping on the floor.
twist the dread, starting at the top, working your way down. It doesn't have to be twisted very tight, but enough to pull it together. Twist it about half way down your dread, then hold on to it with your left hand.
Take the damp wash cloth and hang it over the twisted portion of your dread. Take your hair straightener and starting from close to the top, where it loops over the rope, "straighten" the cloth covered dread.
You should hear a steaming sizzle.
keep that applied for about 20 seconds, then just move down wards.
once your done the top section, i'd suggest dipping the bottom section in the water again, twist, and continue.
At the very end I'd hold the heat on there for about 25 seconds, to make sure it seals nice and tight.
by now it should look like a dread. -
Step 6
after they dry. untie the rope, and slide the dreads off. They all have loops at the top.
You can either braid the single dreads into your hair, or put a bunch of them on a pretty string, or rope, and tie them over your pony tale.
If they start to get warn out, you can always wet and heat again :)

on 11/3/2008 I have a straightening iron that goes up to 446 degrees. How hot do you suggest I go without experimenting and burning up and wasting hair?

on 10/15/2008 jada, um ok so your tying the rope so your dread will be able to slide off it. take your section of hair, about a finger width from the entire bulk, and fold it once over the rope, and make sure the ends are even then start back combing. this will leave a loop at the end of the dread, where you will attatch it either to your own hair, or to a dread fall tie...
does this make sense?
