How to Knit a Snowflake Design

Once you have learned the basics of knitting, more diverse stitches can be mastered with practice. The Snowflake Design is a beautiful variation that adds elegance to any project. The stitches may seem intimidating at first. Go slowly and you'll soon see progress. This pattern assumes a basic knowledge of casting on, stockinette and purl stitches and an ability to translate knitting instructions.

Instructions

      Cast stitches in multiples of 6 stitches plus 1 stitch onto your knitting needles with your choice of yarn.

      Begin row 1 by knitting 1 stitch, then stitch a repeating pattern as follows: yarn over, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit 1, knit 2 stitches together, yarn over, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end.

      Proceed to row 2. Knit row 2 in the purl stitch to the end. Remember to turn your work each time.

      Knit row 3 in knit 2 stitches, yarn over, knit 3 stitches. Repeat this pattern until there are only 2 stitches left, then yarn over and knit 2 stitches. Knit row 4 in the purl stitch to the end.

      Knit row 5 by knitting 2 stitches together, then yarn over, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit 1, knit 2 stitches together.

      Repeat a pattern of yarn over, slip 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, yarn over, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit 1, knit 2 stitches together. Repeat this pattern until there are 2 stitches left, then yarn over, slip 1; then, pass the slipped stitch over. Knit row 6 in the purl stitch to the end.

      Continue the design by knitting 1 stitch, then repeat a pattern by knitting 2 stitches together, yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch , knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end. Knit row 8 in the purl stitch to the end.

      Carry on by knitting row 9 the same as the directions in row 3. Knit row 10 in the purl stitch to the end. Knit row 11 as knit 2, then a repeating pattern of knitting 2 stitches together, yarn over, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over, yarn over, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch, knit 1. Repeat this pattern to the end. Knit row 12 in the purl stitch to the end. Repeat these 12 rows to form the Snowflake Design.
