Step 1
Practice with your puppet with a recording of a simple song or by reciting the alphabet. You can move onto a dialogue with one another or ad lib once you get your technique perfected.
-
Step 2
Open and close your puppet's mouth at natural points in each word, not just on every syllable. Watch yourself talking or lip syncing a song in the mirror, then have your puppet mirror you as you open and close your mouth.
-
Step 3
Be sure your character is opening his mouth to "say" each word, not closing it. If reciting the alphabet, for example, your natural inclination might be to snap the puppet's mouth shut to the beat of each letter. Stay focused so you don't lose your timing.
-
Step 4
Avoid moving your lips if your puppet is lip syncing to a recorded song. Although the moving character will draw the attention of most audience members, some people may be watching the puppeteer to spot flaws in the performance. Try biting the inside of your bottom lip lightly to keep your mouth closed.
-
Step 5
Give your character attitude once you've got the lip syncing mastered. The mark of a great puppeteer is a character with a memorable personality.
-
Step 6
Videotape a performance to determine how effective your practice sessions have been. Give a show for family and friends and ask them if you've got any areas that still need work.
