1
Choose a pattern for the top of the potholder. It can be any traditional quilt block pattern, or you can create your own design. The top can also be a crazy quilt design. Be as creative as you like.
-
2
Piece the potholder top (cotton fabric) together. You can do this step by hand or on the sewing machine.
-
-
3
Trim the potholder top to a 7 inch square with scissors. Adjust the size if you like, but remember to adjust the filling and back piece accordingly.
-
4
Cut the batting the same size as the top piece. Cut the bottom piece 1 inch larger all the way around. If you have a 7 by 7 inch top, the bottom should be 9 by 9 inches.
-
5
Layer the three pieces together. The right sides of the fabric should face out on both the top and bottom pieces. Pin everything together.
-
6
Quilt the three pieces together. You can sew something as simple as an "X," or choose to do a more elaborate pattern. You can do this step with the sewing machine or by hand.
-
7
Turn up a narrow hem all the way around the bottom piece of fabric. Fold it over again to make a binding edge for the topside of the potholder. Miter the corners. Stitch the binding in place.

An old cotton blanket makes a good batting material for potholders.
