Step 1
Begin by assessing your physical condition to perform breakdance moves. Be realistic about your physical ability and dexterity before attempting to perform any difficult breakdance steps.
-
Step 2
Find appropriate breakdance music to practice the moves with. Download various tunes by late '70s and early '80s rap artists for the proper rhythmic pacing in order to execute the moves properly.
-
Step 3
Learn the lingo in order to distinguish between different breakdance moves. Solidify your understanding of the toprock, which is the fundamental starting place of most breakdancing. It involves crossing the right leg over the left, then left over the right to gain momentum and a sense of rhythm before beginning any more difficult moves.
-
Step 4
Master basic drops such as the windmill or the coindrop that entails dropping one arm to the ground and alternating a windmill. Practice basic freezes which consists of stopping the motion of the body in mid movement. Downrocks or footwork simply refer to work that only the legs will be doing, and powermoves typically showcase the athleticism of the dancer.
-
Step 5
Visit a club or location where breakers gather to watch the moves in action to get a better feel for execution. Compare modern breakdancing, which involves a bit more modern hip hop emphasis, with retro moves, which consist primarily of spinning and freezes. Notice the difference between '70s breakers and 80s breakers and be able to execute them both on a basic level.
