When learning to play the guitar, one of the first things learned is chords. A chord is a collection of tones played at the same time to sound harmonious. There are several major ones to begin with when learning to play the guitar.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with a basic C chord. Play this chord by strumming strings A though the high E. Place your forefinger on the B string first fret, your middle finger on the D string second fret and your ring finger on the A string third fret.

  2. Step 2

Perform a G chord with all of the strings. Place your ring finger on the high E string third fret. Play strings B, G and D open. Your forefinger goes on the A string second fret and your middle finger goes on the low E string third fret.

  3. Step 3

Move on to a G7 chord. Play it the same way you play the G major chord, only press down the high E string on the first fret rather than the third.

  4. Step 4

Try a D chord. Play it on the highest four strings. Put a finger on the second fret high E string, the third fret on the B string and the second fret on the G string.

  5. Step 5

Play a D7 chord. Play it the same way as the D major chord, only the B string moves to the first fret.

  6. Step 6

Use all the strings to play an E chord. The E strings and the B string are played open. The G string is pressed down on the first fret. The D and A strings are pressed down in the second fret.

  7. Step 7

Practice an A chord. Play an A chord pressing down the B, G and D strings on the third fret. Strum the highest four strings, not the low E string.
