How Do I Tease or Backcomb Hair for Amazing Volume

Trends in hair usually come and go, but one look that never goes out of style is voluminous hair. Actresses and sex symbols such as Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda made this sultry hairstyle popular in the sixties. Women today still aspire to achieve high-volume, seductive hair. You can get substantial lift and volume on your own at home by teasing your hair with a fine-toothed comb and a few styling products. Teasing and backcombing are the same styling technique, and the terms are used interchangeably.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Volumizing shampoo and conditioner
    • Volumizing tonic, mousse, or spray
    • Blow-dryer
    • Large round brush
    • Fine-toothed comb or rat-tail comb
    • Hairspray
      • 1

Shampoo and condition hair with products formulated to add volume to the hair. This will help to add some lift to the hair and make it appear fuller before teasing. After rinsing out the conditioner, towel dry the hair.

      • 2

Apply the volumizing tonic, mousse, or spray to towel-dried hair. A styling product that contains special ingredients to add volume will further prepare hair for backcombing.

      • 3

Blow-dry hair using the large round brush. Wrap large sections of hair around the brush and hold the nozzle over the brush as you slowly pull it from the root to the end of each section. Using a large brush will create more volume than a small round brush.

      • 4

Grab a 1 to 2 inch section of hair hold it vertically. Tease only sections where you want high volume. It may be easiest to start with hair at the crown. Hold the comb to the underside of the hair about halfway between the roots and ends.

      • 5

Comb gently from the mid-point of the section towards the scalp, making sure to only backcomb the underside of the section. Repeat this process on the section until you have achieved the desired amount of volume. Apply a small amount of hairspray only to the finished section. Repeat this throughout the hair.

      • 6

Smooth the top layers of hair over with the comb after teasing, and style as desired. The teased sections of hair should be concealed under the top layer if you only backcombed the underside.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Do not tease the hair after spraying with hairspray. This will cause the product to become flaky.
