How to Do String Art Painting

Using string and yarn instead of paintbrushes gives a unique look to any painting. Young and old alike will get a kick out of this fun alternative painting procedure. It's a good experiment in mixing colors and easy to learn.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Set up newspaper to cover your work area or set up an art easel.

  2. Step 2

    Arrange craft paints on a paper plate palette. A few dollops of various colors will do fine.

  3. Step 3

    Using string of different strengths and or yarn, clip end of the string to a clothespin, to use as a handle. Drag the yarn or string through the paint dollops and fling onto canvas or paper. Drag and twist the string or yarn in different directions for a variety of art effects. The designs can be amazing and colors will mix as you go.

  4. Step 4

    Listen to different types of music as you paint. Subconsciously your design may change with the various tempos of music playing. Music to paint by is especially interesting for younger children.
