Making your own liquid fabric softener is easy. In the long run, it can help you to save money and even help save the environment.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White vinegar (2 cups)
  • Baking soda (2 cups)
  • Cold water (4 cups)
  1. Step 1

    Mix 2 cups white vinegar and 2 cups baking soda.

  2. Step 2

    You will notice it start to fix. While it is fizzing like crazy like a shaken soda can, add in 4 cups of cold water.

  3. Step 3

    Take 1/4 cup of the liquid fabric softener liquid and pour it into the final rinse cycle of your washing machine.

  4. Step 4

    Save the rest of the fabric softener in an old fabric softener bottle or other handy container.

Tips & Warnings
  • To use fabric softener in your dryer instead of your washer, sprinkle several drops of liquid fabric softener (homemade or store bought) onto a wash cloth, add that to your clothes and toss into your dryer.

on 8/15/2009 I've always used white vinegar N my rinse cycle, I will leave out the baking soda, it will save cost 4 me on the vinegar, 4 I have always used it full strength.
I also use hydrogen peroxide where the bleach goes, last week I forgot 2 use any laundry detergent, my clothes smelled wonderful as always and were just as clean, who knew.......

on 4/8/2009 I was excited to find a "recipe" for fabric softener! I tried this method and, unfortunately, it left a sludge of baking soda in my washer and my clothes feeling gritty. Also, in the container, the baking soda would settle to the bottom, and I would have to shake the bottle before each use. Well, shaking the bottle caused the fizzing to start up again (a little) and when I opened the cap, I got squirted with the liquid- gross! (Kind of like a can of soda) I cannot recommend this recipe. I guess I'm back to searching! :(
