How to Dress for an Interview at an Art Gallery

When interviewing for a job at a large corporation, law firm or financial agency, there is a well known standard for dress. Sporting your best navy suit, button down shirt and sensible shoes, you project a professional, put together and mature image that suits the business culture of those organizations. But in the creative art world, a navy blue suit is the last thing one would wear to an interview with an industry driven by aesthetics. In order to project the image of an artsy, yet poised and responsible individual it is essential to walk the line between fashion and professionalism.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Visit a few art galleries to see how their staff dresses. You will probably notice that many gallery assistants and directors dress rather casually, often in jeans, but you should dress up for the interview, but do so in such a way so as to blend in with the staff.
Step2
Look through your closet and think about your own personal style. Perhaps you have a strong sense of color or a love of crisp lines. In the visually driven art world, your own aesthetic choices are important, so make sure to express yourself with your clothes.
Step3
Once you have chosen a winning outfit, accessorize, but do so with reserve. A smart handbag, funky bracelet or killer shoes are each enough to make a great statement.
Step4
Walk with confidence. Not only does this mean you should feel great in what your wearing, but you should be able to move comfortably in it. You never know if your interviewer will want to take you on a tour of the space or jaunt over to the coffee shop a block down for your conversation.
Step5
Keep the make-up routine simple. Although this is a creative field, you still want the attention to be placed on you and what you have to say, not on your fire engine red lipstick.
