Things You'll Need:
- Pencil sketch
- Tracing paper
- Masking tape
- Sharp pencil
- Carpenter’s level (optional)
- Ruler
- Ladder
- Assistant (optional)
- Photocopy (optional)
-
Step 1
Sketch out your idea onto a sheet of white paper. Don’t use a lot of detail and shading just yet. Focus on the main outlines instead.
-
Step 2
Make a photocopy of your sketch, then use a ruler to draw a grid over the photocopy of the sketch. If you don’t have access to photocopies, it’s okay to use the original sketch. If the drawing is simple, you can draw large 1-inch squares for the grid. Complex drawings need grids with smaller squares. Make sure the grid covers all parts of the sketch.
-
Step 3
Apply labels to the squares. Starting on the left, number the squares at the top and bottom of the grid. Use letters to label the squares on the left and right side of the grid. Write your labels on the outside edge of the grid.
-
Step 4
Draw a second grid on the wall that contains the same number of squares and has the same labeling. This second grid should be much larger. If you have a carpenter’s level, use it to make sure the lines of your grid stay straight. You may need to use a ladder for this step.
-
Step 5
Find a square in the first grid, then find the same square in the grid on the wall. Using the small sketch as a guide, draw any lines you see in the square on the small grid in the square on the wall grid. Be as precise as you can.
-
Step 6
Repeat step 5 until the original sketch has been transferred to the wall.
-
Step 7
Erase the grid on the wall. Now that you have a wall sketch, you can fill it in with more detail and even add color. Enlarging a sketch onto a wall is fast and easy when you use a grid.
