One good reason to turn your tween book idea into a tween book series is that you have a contract to write several books at one time. Also book series are very popular. Read on to learn how to turn your concept into a proposal for a series of books.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Something to write with and to write on (computer or typewriter)
  1. Step 1

Begin your series proposal by deciding upon the age range of your target audience: about 7 to 12 for tweens, the genre of your series: mystery, fantasy, etc, and who your main characters are, and finally the theme that ties your book series together in no more than a sentence.

  2. Step 2

Using your notes from step one, write a succinct overview of the series in a few paragraphs. Start with the hook that will grab your editor and readers. You might compare your series to other popular tween series, but make sure to describe how your concept is different and unique.

  3. Step 3

Break down characters and write a short paragraph for each. Most book series will have two and no more than four major characters. This is not an absolute but a good guide.

  4. Step 4

Write a synopsis for the first four books in the series. Think of each as a book cover blurb. These are like trailers for a movie, highlighting the excitement of your stories.

  5. Step 5

Write the first chapters for your first book. A book concept is great, but you need to demonstrate to your editor that you can pull it off.

  6. Step 6

Put the proposal together. A good proposal includes a strong succinct logline, a strong succinct overview of the story, a character breakdown, synopses of individual books, a marketing pitch, and three sample chapters.

Tips & Warnings
  • Kids love book series because they love the characters. Sometimes they even love them because they like collecting every issue like baseball cards. Parents and librarians love series because they are a great way to get a child engaged in reading.
  • Make certain your series doesn’t sound just like an existing series.
