How to Naturally Darken Hair Color With Cocoa

Cocoa isn’t only good for making hot chocolate or adding flavor to a cake -- it's also handy when it’s time to get your hair color touched up. If you want your tresses to be darker, skip the chemical dyes you may use at home or encounter at a salon -- go the all-natural route with cocoa instead. You can even have some fun and throw a cake-making, hair-dyeing party with your friends and family. Whichever way you want to go, stir up a chocolaty concoction and slather it on your strands to instantly darken the hue.

Ooey-Gooey Cocoa Paste

Step 1

Pour 1/2 cup of cocoa powder into a bowl. Add 1 teaspoon each of honey and apple-cider vinegar and 1/2 cup of plain yogurt. Stir well with a whisk to create a paste.

Step 2

Shampoo your hair as usual. Squeeze out the excess water from your hair.

Step 3

Spread the cocoa paste through your hair, starting at the roots and working the mixture through the tips to cover all of your hair. If you just want the color in certain spots, rub the paste only on the desired areas of hair.

Step 4

Leave the mixture in your hair for about three minutes. Rinse your hair without shampooing. Towel dry your hair and style it as usual.

Shampoo Your Way to Darker Tresses

Step 1

Take the cap of a shampoo bottle that is half filled with shampoo and fill it the rest of the way with cocoa powder.

Step 2

Put the cap on the bottle and shake it up well to combine the ingredients.

Step 3

Use the shampoo as you would your regular shampoo to darken your hair. You can use it daily, if desired, to maintain a darker hair color.
