If you want to reformat a hard drive and make it clean or wiped. I recommend using a free tool called kill disk. You can download the CD image for free which will make you a bootable CD. Get it at http://www.killdisk.com. Follow the instructions on the site to download and create a Bootable CD. The following instructions demonstrate the steps to format and wipe a hard drive.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Kill Disk Bootable CD

Step1
Insert The Kill Disk CD.
Step2
Restart the Computer. (If your computer boots to the CD before the Hard Drive then you should get the Kill Disk Menu, if not then you need to change your boot priority in the computer's BIOS).
Step3
When the computer starts you should see the Kill Disk Menu.
Step4
Using the keyboard highlight the physical drive (example: Hard Drive 0).
Step5
Press F10.
Step6
After some time (Usually somewhere around the 1 hour mark or longer) you will get a completed message. Your hard drive is now formated and wiped clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • This will erase all data and make any recovery attempt almost impossible.
  • Make sure you want to format the drive and loose all data before doing this.
