Step 1
Find an old can, preferably with a plastic lid. You can also use a safety can opener to open the can. This way there are no sharp edges. Clean the can.
-
Step 2
Make a slit in the lid of the can. If you have a plastic lid, carefully cut the slot with a craft knife. If you are using a metal lid, hammer a nail through the lid into a block of wood. Just go deep enough to puncture the lid. Make a series of holes side by side to make the slot.
-
Step 3
File any sharp edges carefully. This step is especially important if young children are going to play with the bank.
-
Step 4
Wrap a sheet of fun foam around the tin can to measure how much you need. If you are using a plastic lid, allow about ΒΌ inch at the top for the lid to fit. You can overlap the foam, if you choose, or you can butt one end up against the other. Cut the foam to size.
-
Step 5
Heat the glue gun. Run a bead of glue down the seam of the tin can. Place one edge of the fun foam along the bead of glue. Make sure the foam is straight on the can. Wrap it around the can. Run a second bead of glue in the proper location to set the second end of the fun foam. Hold the fun foam until the glue sets or wrap rubber bands around the can.
-
Step 6
Decorate the fun foam with pictures and fun foam shapes. Or, use craft paints to paint the fun foam. Exercise your creativity.
-
Step 7
Seal a regular can with a drop or two of rubber cement. It's easy to remove to open the bank. Just reapply it to seal the bank back shut again.
